METHOD

Solo – Think – Write

Students independently engage with a challenge posed by the teacher.

The method gives each student an opportunity to map out their own thoughts, knowledge, and perspectives on a given challenge before being influenced by others’ ideas.

1

Students receive a challenge which they individually respond to by writing down their thoughts, knowledge, and perspectives.

2

Students write during the given time. Make it clear that there should be complete silence while they write.

Didactic tips:

  • Choose a topic that most students have the background to write something about.
  • Make students aware that it doesn’t matter if what they write is neat or spelled correctly.
  • Tell the students that it is what they are thinking right now, and that it is okay if they later think, believe, or feel something different.
  • Ask the students to signal when they have finished their writing process, for example by looking up or closing their computer screen.
