ACTIVITY

On a photo hunt for clothing

Students take pictures of everything they can see in their surroundings and everyday life that has to do with clothing and textiles.

The intention is to open up the theme of clothing in relation to the students’ own world.

1

Divide the class into groups. Equip each group with a camera and share a digital wall on Padlet via On a photo hunt for clothing with the class. The digital wall becomes the class’s shared photo collage, to which the groups upload their images.

2

The groups go on a photo hunt to document everything to do with clothes and textiles using the A New Perspective:

  • Choose a relevant place to go.
At school, in the neighborhood, in the city, at a company, at home, on a playground, by the water, in a store, in the closet.
  • Look for some surprising objects, angles or details.
For example. Take a picture of the inside of the toe of a shoe, zoom in on textile fibers.
  • Photos of people should not be made without having their explicit consent to do so. If in doubt, don’t make the picture.
3

Back in class, the groups upload their images to the shared digital photo collage on Padlet. If necessary, ask the groups to select a certain number of images to upload.

4

Look through the images with the class. Agree on some categories that the images can be divided into using the Category Development. Distribute the images in the selected categories. This could be, for example:

  • Clothing production – Clothing consumption – Clothing waste
  • Hot – Not
  • Pros – Cons
  • Problems – Solutions
5

End the activity by asking students what surprised them most, and if their perspective on clothing has changed because of some of the photos.

Didactic tips:

  • Extend the activity by letting students invent the image categories.
  • The activity can be extended by working with image cropping, image
    composition and camera angles.
  • The activity can also be given as a homework assignment. In this way, the images will
represent the student’s everyday life with clothes.
  • The photo collage on Padlet can be retrieved for later use, for example to document a
clothing feeding, show an idea for a solution or similar.
