Students compare data by identifying similarities and differences.
The method trains students to analyse data with the aim of spotting patterns and/or deviations.
Divide the participants into groups or pairs, and give each group the data set they are to compare. This could be texts, statistics, observations, interview responses, images, etc.
Students systematically review their data and take notes on the worksheet Similarities and Differences:
Similarities: e.g., themes, trends, or recurring results
Differences: e.g., unique variations, inconsistencies, or deviations
Students reflect on and share their views on which patterns or deviations seem most interesting or relevant for their further work. How can they use this insight to draw conclusions or take new steps?
Encourage the students to look at both the big picture and the small details in their data set, as both can reveal important similarities and differences.
Optionally, involve the whole class in discussing the results to bring in as many perspectives as possible on the identified similarities and differences.
You can also use the Venn Diagram method as an alternative or supplement.
The method is used, among other things, in activity XXX
