METHOD

Talking Knot

The pupils speak or present one at a time when a knot on a long rope randomly ends up in their hands.

This method gives every pupil the opportunity to speak and trains their ability to listen to each other without interrupting.

BEFORE:

Obtain a rope approximately 30–40 cm per pupil, or about 10 metres in total. Tie the rope into a circle with one knot tied somewhere on the rope.

1

The pupils stand in a circle and hold onto the rope.

2

The rope is passed clockwise around the circle until someone says “stop” at a random moment. The person holding or closest to the knot then has the floor and can speak or present.

3

Continue until time is up or until no one has anything more to say.

Didactic tips:

  • If it’s difficult to get a long rope, an object that the pupils pass around the circle can also be used.
  • Make sure all pupils have the opportunity to make eye contact.
  • You can set a timer with an alarm so the pupils experience that stopping is completely random.
  • If a pupil has nothing to say or does not wish to speak, the rope is passed on again.
