METHOD

Pairwise Elimination

Pupils compare ideas, suggestions, or solutions two at a time and choose one. The process is repeated until one idea has eliminated all the others.

This method is well suited for training pupils’ decision-making skills and ensuring a thorough evaluation of all options.

1

Present all ideas, suggestions, or solutions. Ensure that pupils share a common understanding of the criteria for making their choice.

2

Pupils draw or choose two ideas, suggestions, or solutions to evaluate against each other. If working in pairs or groups, they discuss and agree on which one to choose based on the agreed criteria.

3

The winning idea, suggestion, or solution moves on to the next round.

4

Pupils repeat the process with the winning ideas until only one idea remains as the overall winner.

Didactic tips:

  • Pupils can either continue with the winning idea, suggestion, or solution and compare it to a new one, or draw two new ones to compare against each other. In the latter case, the process is repeated with all the winners, and so on, until only one remains.

  • Consider using visual tools such as a ‘tournament bracket’ to make the process clearer and more manageable.

  • You might also discuss with the class why the winning idea performed best and what pupils learned from the process.

  • Consider reflecting on how the method helped explore the strengths and weaknesses of the different ideas.

  • Pupils can document their reasoning throughout the process to reflect on it afterwards.
