Method

Categorisation

Students categorize different elements in the form of data, statements, or ideas into predetermined categories.

The method trains students to analyse and organise information in order to create an overview and deepen their understanding.

1

Review the predetermined categories that the students are to use. Explain the characteristics of each category.

2

Distribute or let the students choose/find/produce the elements they are to categorise. This could, for example, be in the form of provided inspiration cards, post-its with their own ideas, a list, or digital files.

3

Students go through their elements one by one and each suggest which category they belong to. Encourage them to argue or explain their reasoning for their choice.

4

Students place each element in the category that they collectively find to be the most fitting.

5

For elements where the students are uncertain, they can conduct further investigations, for example by looking up information on the internet or using other relevant resources to gain more background knowledge.

6

Students review their categorisation and make adjustments if they have changed their understanding of the content of a category.

Didactic tips

  • Students can suggest one or more new categories using the Categorisation method if they feel that the predetermined categories do not adequately cover all the elements.
  • After categorising the elements, students can categorize them again using a new set of categories.
  • Optionally, add a time limit so that students have to categorise quickly. This can encourage spontaneity and help students go with their first instinct.
  • You can also ask students to visually color-code their categorisation, making it easier to see which elements have been categorised where.
  • This method is used, among other things, in activity XXX
