My Food Waste Diary

he Food Waste Diary is a student worksheet designed to help learners track and reflect on their daily food waste over the course of one week.

  • For each day, students record:

    • Meal – when the food was wasted (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack).

    • Food – what type of food was thrown away.

    • How much – the approximate quantity (e.g., half a bowl, five spoons).

    • Why – the reason for throwing the food away (not hungry, didn’t like it, too much on the plate, expired, etc.).

    • What did I do with it – how the waste was handled (thrown in the trash, composted, fed to animals, saved for later).

  • The diary covers seven days, giving students a clear overview of their personal or family food waste habits.

  • At the end of the week, students answer three reflection questions:
    a) Which type of food was most often left over?
    b) What was the main reason for leftovers?
    c) What did I usually do with the leftovers?
