Who Are the Bees? – Part 1

Students collaborate in groups to research various aspects of bee life and present their findings in a creative format.

The aim is for students to understand the structure and ecological importance of bees, and how they contribute to both nature and human life.

Before:

The introduction video is in English. Check beforehand if the level of English suits your group, and if not try to find a comparable video in the teaching language.

1

Tell students that you will do a small project about bees. Use the Statements of Wonder method to stimulate curiosity.

2

Divide the class in groups of 3-4 students. Make the groups through the Interest Groups method. Each group will investigate a question. Examples of questions are:

  • Structure of a bee: How is a bee’s body built, and how does it fly?

  • Life in the hive: What are the roles of the queen, workers, and drones?

  • Importance of bees: How do bees benefit plants and humans?

  • Threats to bees: Why are bees disappearing, and how can we help protect them?

3

Introduce the students to the method of Active Listening before watching the video. Now students watch Who Are the Bees? – Part 1, eacah group having their own purpose.

4

Give the students time to invesetigate their questions further. This can be inside using Knowledge Mapping, or outside by using the Photo Safari.

5

Continue another time with Who Are the Bees – Part 2.

Didactic tips:

  • Integrate the topic with Art (e.g., drawing bees or designing posters) or Language (e.g., writing a bee poem or short story).

  • Invite a local beekeeper to the class to share real-life experiences and answer student questions.

  • Use interest-based group formation to let students choose a research topic that excites them (e.g., hive life, bee anatomy, environmental threats).

  • Allow students to present their findings in different formats (e.g., slideshow, video, infographic) to support diverse learning styles.
