Waggle Dance – Part 2

Students learn how bees communicate through movement and create their own non-verbal “dance language” to give directions.

To explore communication as a symbolic, cooperative process, in bees and humans.

Before:

This Brick is a follow up on the Waggle Dance – Part 1.

1

Emotion in Motion. In pairs, students create a short sequence of movements expressing a specific feeling or message (e.g. joy, frustration, urgency, warning, curiosity).

 After performing:

  • What emotion or message were you trying to convey?
  • What helped make it clear (or unclear) to others?
  • How is this similar to or different from how bees communicate?
  • How do we ‘dance’ in real life, without realizing it?

You can use the Mime and Guess method.

2

In small groups, students design a short choreography (30–60 seconds) combining elements of bee communication (precise, directional, rhythmic) with human expression (emotional, symbolic, creative).

Encourage them to consider:

  • What’s your message?
  • What role does rhythm, space, repetition or gesture play?
  • How do you make your intent clear without using words?
3

Performance & peer feedback. Groups perform their choreography. After each one, peers respond to:

  • What message or emotion came through?
  • What made it effective or hard to read?
  • How did it feel to express or interpret movement as language?

For the presentations you can use the methods of Café Presentation or the Presentation Bazaar.
For the feedback you can use the Two Stars and a Wish method.

Use the Waggle Dance Reflection Worksheet to reflect on this Brick.

Didactic tips:

  • Encourage students to focus on clarity and intention behind each movement.
  • Use peer feedback to develop empathy and critical observation skills.
  • Highlight connections between animal and human communication to deepen understanding of symbolic language.
