Building a Bioeconomy Legacy – Part 2

Description:Reflect on and share the knowledge gathered from an intergenerational interview, and explore how traditional practices can contribute to sustainable resource use and resilience today.

Intention:Students develop reflection, communication, and presentation skills while connecting traditional knowledge to contemporary sustainability challenges and opportunities.

This activity covers two Bricks.
Part 1 – Prepare the interview
Between activities: Students conduct the interview with an older family or community member.
Part 2 – Share and connect the knowledge

Before:

  • Make sure students have completed Part 1 and conducted their interviews.
  • Ask students to bring their interview notes, recordings, or other materials to class.
  • Prepare a space where students can work in small groups and present their findings.

Recap
Students briefly share who they interviewed and how their experience was.

Collect stories
Students organise their notes, recordings, or videos and identify the key practices and stories they want to share.

Reflect and discuss
Discuss what practices were discovered, which resources they used, and why the practices were useful?

Connect to sustainability
Discuss which practices could still be useful today and how they could support sustainable resource use or community resilience.

5

Share the knowledge
Students share/present their findings through the Duet Presentation or Presentation Bazaar.

Didactic tips:

  • Encourage students to focus on the meaning and context behind the practices, not only on what was done.
  • Ask students to consider both the strengths and limitations of traditional practices in a modern context.
  • Connect students’ findings to current sustainability challenges and encourage them to identify practices that could inspire solutions today.
  • When sharing personal stories, remind students to respect the interviewee’s privacy and only share information they have permission to share.
