ACTIVITY

The production of a t-shirt

The students will experience the conditions in which some children work and feel the injustice and inequality in the world.

The intention is to show children an experience of injustice and inequality.

1

Divide the class in two groups using the Random Groups method.

2

One group sits on the floor in a cold and dark room, they are not allowed to talk and they only get a short instruction on how to fold a t-shirt in paper. You can make a template for the t-shirts, or simply think of your own folding method for the pieces of paper. The other group is in a nice, light room. There is music on in the background, they are allowed to talk, and receive proper instructions. They are supervised and can ask questions whenever.

3

Return to the class, and let students discuss their experience in pairs.

4

Discuss the results and reflections with the class:

  • Who folded most t-shirts?
  • Who folded the nicest looking t-shirts?
  • How was the experience for you?

Didactic tips:

  • Combine this activity with watching a documentary or video on child labor in fast fashion, as found in theĀ Documentaries on the fast fashion industry resource.
  • Groups can change roles after having been in one condition, so that they experience both.
