Students will become familiar with food labels, the way ingredients are listed on food products, and the descending order of ingredients according to their presence in the product. They will learn about various chemical additives in food and the associated risks.
The intention is that they learn how to read food labels and why is important to investigate the list of ingredients on food products and be aware of the risks associated with excessive amounts of added additives.
Introduction to the theme
Teacher explains food labels. Why are some food additives necessary and some are potentialy hazardous for our health?
Play with the cards: FOOD LABEL DETECTIVE
The teacher distributes cards with a list of ingredients to the students.
The students find the cards with the corresponding product that matches the list of ingredients.
This is followed by a discussion with the students about what they found interesting in the activity, whether they have ever read or even investigate the ingredients lists before, and whether anything particularly surprised them about the ingredient lists and food labels.

1. MAKING NEW FOOD LABELS CARDS
The pupils could make cards themselves for the various kind of products.
2. NON-CHEMICAL CANDY HUNT – VISIT THE STORE
The pupils visit a shop and find food products with the fewest or with the most disputed/risky additives.
Alternative activity: comparing different soft drinks according to amount of added chemicals.
