Students explore different local soils, identify their colours using the Munsell Soil Colour Chart, and create a moodboard to compare soil types.
Check beforehand where you plan to collect the soil and make sure it’s possible to take samples (e.g. the ground should not be too dry or too hard). Make sure to have some small shovels and pots to put the soil in.
Introduction. Explain that students will collect local soil samples and observe how soil colour varies between locations.
Collecting soil samples. Go outside (school grounds, park, garden) and gather small samples from several different spots.
Observe & Compare. Spread samples on white paper or trays. Compare texture, moisture, and colour.

Identify Colours. Use the Munsell Soil Colour Chart to match each soil sample. Record either the Munsell code or a simple colour description (e.g., dark brown, reddish).
Create the Moodboard. Arrange samples or photos on a large sheet. Label each with:
