ACTIVITY

Textile hunt

Students map out what textiles they know and investigate what types of textiles their clothes are made of.

The intention is for students to gain knowledge of textile types and washing label information.

1

In groups of four, students make a list of all the types of textiles they know. With the Round Robin – Writing method, students take turns having the floor and a selected student writes the list.

2

Make a large pile of clothing on the floor in the middle of the classroom. Pick up a piece of clothing and show students where the laundry label is located. Explain how to read the percentage distribution of which types of textiles the garment consists of. For example 95% polyester, 5% elastane. Students can alternatively be asked to look at the labels in their own clothing, rather than bringing clothing.

3

In pairs, students research the laundry labels to add even more types of textiles to their list.

4

Pick up on the main points: Which textiles did they know and which are new? Check out the Textile types inspiration cards and see, whether the class has all types included. If not, they are added to the list.
