The critical clothing consumer – Part 1

Students choose a clothing company. They investigate their sustainability claims to spot any greenwashing.

The intention is for students to train their critical sense as clothing consumers so that they can make good choices in favor of the climate.

This is part 1 of the bricks. Part 2 can be found here: The critical clothing consumer – Part 2

1

In pairs, students choose a clothing company to investigate for sustainability. Students can choose which clothing company they want to work with based on inspiration cards surrounding Clothing companies with a sustainability profile. They can also choose a company they suspect of not being sustainable.

2

Hand out the inspiration cards from Guide for spotting greenwashing in fashion companies and review it with the class. You can use the sustainability page of a company such as H&M as an example.

3

Ask students plenary to give some examples on what to look for in sustainability claims. Continue the conversation until students seem to understand the criteria.

Didactic tips:

  • Instead of students going through the entire guide to spotting greenwashing, they can choose 2-3 cards to immerse themselves in, or the class can be divided into 8 groups, each taking their own card.
  • Often an authentic communication method can motivate students. Consider whether the class should create a folder, poster, video or something else where they collect the class’s finds. Hang it up in the school library, send it home to parents, or create an event in the local clothing store.
