The fashion ‘why’

The students formulate their own motivation and vision for sustainable fashion and design a creative solution for a more sustainable world.

The intention is to foster intrinsic motivation and visionary thinking about circular futures in students.

1

Show and describe the 3 short examples of Sustainable fashion initiatives.

2

Ask students to think about these examples, and to start thinking about alternatives futures through the Futures of fashion brainstorm prompts. Project these questions on the board, and let students reflect on these questions by themselves using the Silent Brainstorming method. Give them 5 minutes to brainstorm the ‘now’, 5 minutes for the ‘future’, and 5 minutes for their idea.

3

Form small groups using the Random Groups method. Let students share their visions and discuss what motivates them using the Talking Chips method.

4

Using the Value Compass method, ask students to draw an x and y axis. On the x axis, students write ‘basic’ on the left, and ‘original’ on the right. On the y axis, they write ‘unoriginal’ at the bottom, and ‘original’ at the top. Now give them 5-10 minutes to write their ideas into these axes.

5

Guide groups to think of a small initiative or solution to promote sustainable fashion. The ideas which belong to ‘original’ and ‘realistic’ on the cluster are the ideas that students are recommended to focus on. They can pick one of these ideas, or combine them. Students can refer back to the Futures of fashion when in doubt.

6

Let groups build a representation of their vision using clean waste and art supplies (e.g. a pop-up shop, repair café, swap platform, clothing with revolutionary materials). Alternatively: Provide sheets of paper and craft materials, to let them represent their ideas through a poster.

7

Combine all creations on a large table or paper, into a fashion neighborhood. Let each group explain their project to the others using the Elevator Pitch method. Alternatively: Create a presentation market using the Café Presentation method.

Didactic tips:

  • Let all groups briefly write down what they made on the leaving a message handout, and what message they want to give to the world regarding clothing. Find a place where all designs and messages can be displayed, either in the school or at a public place. Alternatively, invite parents or save the designs for the days that parents come to visit.
