Traditional clothing comparison map

The students work in small groups to research traditional clothing and footwear from different cultures. They create simple drawings and place them on a world map to show each item’s origin.

The intention is to help students explore cultural diversity, understand the meaning and materials behind traditional clothing, and visually connect global traditions through collaborative research.

Divide students in groups (3 – 5) using the Random Groups method.

Each group receives a list of 3 traditional clothes (and shoes) for different ethnic/culture group. Example list:

  • Sari – worn in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal
  • Kimono – worn in Japan
  • Kebaya – worn in Indonesia and South-East Asia
  • Hanbko – worn in South Korea
  • Shúkà – worn in Kenya and Tanzania
  • Kilt – worn in Scotland
  • Agbada – worn in West and North Africa
  • Bamileke Elephant Mask – worn in Cameroon
  • Huipil – worn in Mexico and Central America
  • Kanzu – worn in Central and East Africa
  • Dashiki – worn in Ghana
  • Keffiyah – worn in Palestina
  • Beret – worn in Spain and France
  • Sombrero – worn in Mexico and Colombia
  • Wooden clogs – worn in the Netherlands
  • Taraz – worn in Armenia
  • Lederhosen – worn in Austria
  • White cassock – worn in Vatican City

For every example they need to research how it looks, from which materials are they made of, what is their meaning.

For each example they make a simple drawing on a poster or big sheet of paper.

Students tell about their research using the 3-Point Presentation method.

Together with the class, you put each drawing on one big map according to where’s it from.
