Who Are the Bees? – Part 1

Students collaborate in groups to research various aspects of bee life and present their findings in a creative format.

The aim is for students to understand the structure and ecological importance of bees, and how they contribute to both nature and human life.

1

Students watch the Who Are the Bees? – Part 1 video.

Before watching the video, you can use the Statements of Wonder or the Question Wall method to stimulate curiosity. While watching the video, you can use the method of Active Listening.

2

The students will work in groups of 3-4.

3

Each group will investigate one of the following questions:

  • Structure of a bee: How is a bee’s body built, and how does it fly?

  • Life in the hive: What are the roles of the queen, workers, and drones?

  • Importance of bees: How do bees benefit plants and humans?

  • Threats to bees: Why are bees disappearing, and how can we help protect them?

Groups can be made by using the Interest Groups method.

4

For the investigation of the students, the methods of Photo Safari and Knowledge Mapping can be used.

Continue next time with Who Are the Bees – Part 2.

Didactic tips:

  • Integrate the topic with Art (e.g., drawing bees or designing posters) or Language (e.g., writing a bee poem or short story).

  • Invite a local beekeeper to the class to share real-life experiences and answer student questions.

  • Use interest-based group formation to let students choose a research topic that excites them (e.g., hive life, bee anatomy, environmental threats).

  • Allow students to present their findings in different formats (e.g., slideshow, video, infographic) to support diverse learning styles.
