Zero-Waste Lunch Box Challenge

The students explore how to pack a zero‑waste lunch by sorting packaging, brainstorming ‘swap it’ ideas, and designing a poster of a waste‑free lunchbox.

The intention is to build everyday habits that reduce packaging and food waste, and to empower students to make simple, sustainable choices.

1

Warm‑up (5′): Show a few Lunch items_Picture frames. Ask: ‘Which makes the most waste? Why?’

2

Sorting game (10′): In groups, sort items into: Icons RRRC. Discuss what happens to each pile.

3

Brainstorming (10′): For each single‑use item, propose a reusable or lower‑waste alternative. Write ideas on sticky notes (e.g., juice box → refillable bottle; plastic wrap → small container). Swap it Cards

4

Poster making (15′): Design a ‘Zero‑Waste Lunchbox’ poster that shows their chosen swaps, adds 1–2 food waste tips (e.g., pack only what you will eat), and a short slogan. Use Zero Waste Lunch Box Checklist, Swap it Cardsidea cards.

5

Gallery walk & pledge (5′): Share posters. Each student signs one Class Pledge Slips: ‘This week I will try: ________’ and tapes it under the class poster.

Didactic tips:

• Differentiation: give icon stickers to younger students; invite older ones to weigh packaging and add simple graphs.
• Extension: track class waste for a week before/after the challenge.
• Inclusion: allow students to suggest culturally familiar, low‑waste snacks.
