The students process academic content presented to them by drawing, explaining, and summarising the most important points.
The method supports students in cognitively engaging with academic material and in transforming the acquired knowledge into different modalities.
Present academic content while the students listen.
Stop the presentation after an appropriate amount of academic content. Ask the students to draw the most important points of what they have heard. The students then explain their drawing to a partner.
Ask the students to write a summary of the most important content.
Continue with the presentation, and repeat from step 2.
Model an example where you think aloud and show how you would draw the academic content.
Emphasise that it is not about “drawing nicely,” but about converting what they hear into a drawing.
The method can also be used when playing films or audio files with academic content. Here, the film/audio can be paused along the way, after which the students draw the most important content.
