Brainstorming with Artificial Intelligence

Students use artificial intelligence (AI) as an active participant to generate a wide range of diverse ideas.

This method trains students to use AI creatively to explore different possible solutions to a problem.

1

Formulate a problem, or ask the students to formulate a problem they want to develop ideas for.

2

Students describe to their chatbot (e.g. SchoolGPT) that they are school pupils in a specific year group, which subject it concerns, and what the problem is about.

3

Students explain to the chatbot that it should act as an active participant in a brainstorming session with them. They describe the process as a “ping-pong” game, where the students suggest and write an idea to the chatbot, which then responds with a new idea, and this exchange continues.

4

Students start brainstorming together with the artificial intelligence. It is important that they support each other in formulating their own ideas, so everyone contributes and shares their ideas with the chatbot.

Didactic tips

  • Students can instruct the chatbot to focus on providing ideas that present as many different perspectives as possible to increase variety.
  • It’s important that students don’t develop all their ideas in advance. The ideas contributed by the AI should serve as inspiration for students to create new, more varied ideas themselves.
  • Students can set a limit for the brainstorming by instructing the chatbot to stop once, for example, 30–40 ideas have been generated in total.

Example prompt:
Hi! We’re Year 8 students working on brainstorming for (subject, theme). We want to come up with ideas for (describe the problem). You will be an active participant in our brainstorming and play “ping-pong” with us:

We write one idea.
You reply with a new idea that is significantly different from ours.
We take turns like this until we have developed (insert number) ideas in total.

Rules:

  • Each idea should be as different as possible.

  • Help us see the problem from new angles and perspectives.

Are you ready? Our first idea is: (write your idea).
