Dot voting

Pupils receive three stickers or similar tokens, which they use to vote for the ideas, suggestions, or solutions they find most relevant or interesting.

This method helps pupils prioritise among several options and supports democratic participation.

Place the ideas, suggestions, or solutions to be voted on in a visible spot, such as on a wall, board, or large sheet of paper.

Give each pupil three stickers (or other markers).

Pupils individually and silently place their stickers on the ideas, suggestions, or solutions they think are best. They can choose to use all three stickers on one idea or distribute them across two or three ideas.

Once everyone has voted, the votes are counted to identify the most popular ideas.

Didactic tips:

  • You may want to limit the number of ideas or suggestions to keep the process manageable.
  • Have selected pupils present their reasons for their choices to encourage reflection and dialogue.
  • Consider having a class discussion about the ideas that received the most votes and use this as a starting point for further work or decisions.
  • As a variation, you can introduce a rule that pupils must place their three ‘dots’ on three different ideas, suggestions, or solutions.
