METHOD

Paired Reading

Students read a text aloud to each other at their own pace, immersing themselves in the text.

This method allows many students to read simultaneously and receive support from their partner.

1

Students are divided into pairs and told who is Partner A and who is Partner B.

2

Students are given a text, with clear indications or explanations of which parts Partner A and Partner B should read.

3

Students take turns reading, explaining what they read, and listening until the text is finished or the time is up.

Didactic tips:

  • Mark in the text when to switch between Partner A and Partner B.
  • Consider what students who finish quickly can do while waiting for others.
  • Consider how students with reading difficulties can be supported. For example, may they use a reading tool, or should the pair read aloud together?
  • Differentiate the method by giving the listener a role, such as taking notes, summarising, explaining difficult terms, or similar.
  • The method can also be used in groups of three or more.
  • This method is used in activity XXX
