METHOD

Idea Relay

Each student chooses an idea, writes it down, and passes it on so that other students can build upon it.

The method is effective for supporting students in engaging with each other’s ideas and collaborating to further develop them.

1

Each student individually selects one idea. It can be the idea they believe in the most or the one they feel most connected to.

2

They briefly describe their idea at the top of a piece of paper.

3

The students pass the paper on to the next person in the group, who builds on the idea by writing new ideas, thoughts and questions on the paper.

4

After a short time (e.g. 1 minute), the students pass the papers on to the next student, who continues to develop the idea.

5

The paper rotates until the paper is filled, time is up, or the ideas are returned to the student who had the original idea.

6

The students individually read the other students’ ideas and suggestions for further development of their original idea.

Didactic tips:

  • The method can also be used with pairs or groups, where they collectively choose one of their ideas to pass on, and together provide ideas for the other groups’ ideas.

  • Optionally, use the Brainstorming method or one of the other brainstorming techniques beforehand, so that the students have many ideas to choose from before starting the idea relay.

  • Following the idea relay, students can individually, within their group, decide which inputs they want to develop further and which to discard.
