METHOD

Educated Guess

Students guess answers to one or more questions. They receive a clue or more information and guess again.

This method trains students to engage actively with questions and move from guessing to understanding.

1

Share the question with the students.

2

Students guess the answer individually or in groups and write down their responses.

3

Provide a new clue, perspective, or additional information.

4

Students adjust their answers if they wish.

5

Reveal the correct answer, if there is a factual one. Summarise with the class and discuss why it is the answer.

Didactic tips:

  • Choose questions that challenge students’ assumptions and spark curiosity.

  • Students can write down their reasoning for answers.

  • Ask individuals or groups to share and justify their guesses.

  • Consider having students create statements or questions for each other.

  • Discuss how students qualify their knowledge—distinguishing fact from intuition.
