Students come up with everything that would make the situation worse instead of better, and then they reframe those ideas into positive ones.
This method helps students generate more and different types of ideas, as it can be both fun and easier for some students to start with negative ideas rather than positive ones.
Equip students with post-its and writing materials.
Give, or remind the students of, the challenge they will brainstorm about. Explain that they should come up with as many ideas as possible on how the situation could get worse or how a desired goal could be hindered. Encourage the students to share wild, strange, and funny ideas.
The students brainstorm together without evaluating their ideas during the process. They write down the ideas as they go.
The students reframe the negative ideas into positive ones. You can optionally use the worksheet From Negative to Positive Ideas
Optionally combine with the Silent Brainstorming method, where students generate ideas individually and in silence before brainstorming together.
Optionally introduce some brainstorming rules, such as students saying “YES, AND” whenever someone shares an idea, or “Good idea” to encourage each other and boost their confidence to come up with creative and wild ideas.
This method is used, among others, in activity XXX
