METHOD

Role-Reading

Students read a text in groups, taking turns with different roles related to the content.

The method allows students to process the text in a way that helps them better remember and understand the content.

1

Present the text and highlight the sections that the groups will use when switching roles.

2

Students do role reading:

  1. One student reads aloud

  2. One student summarises the main content

  3. One student creates a heading/finds key subject terms

  4. One student shows connections

3

The roles rotate, so student 2 reads the next section aloud, student 3 summarises, and so on. Students support each other.

4

Continue until the text is read or time is up.

Didactic tips:

  • If a student has difficulty reading, another student can read along, or a device can be used to read the text aloud.
  • Choose roles that make sense in relation to the purpose of the reading.
  • Avoid overly long text sections to maintain focus.
  • For longer texts, students can start with role reading and then finish by reading individually or in pairs.
  • The method is used in activity XXX
