The pupils guess whether a series of statements are true or false, and justify their answers.
This method activates pupils’ prior knowledge and trains them to respond both attentively and critically to what they are presented with.
BEFORE:
Choose, or let the pupils choose, a theme for which a series of statements, either true or false, will be created.
The pupils respond to the statements one at a time.
Individually, with a partner, or in their group, the pupils decide whether they think the statement is true or false.
The pupils justify their answers by explaining why they believe the statement is true or false.
Reveal whether the statement is true or false, and explain why.
Pupils can benefit from answering individually (for example, by noting down their answers) before sharing them with the group or class. This supports all pupils in engaging with the statement.
Pupils can also work in groups to create their own statements, which they then read aloud to each other or share in other ways with the rest of the class.
If pupils work in pairs or groups, the statements can be written on cards, with the answer and a brief explanation or justification noted on the back. The pupils can then draw the cards and proceed at their own pace.
