This method is effective for promoting creative thinking, strengthening pupils’ ability to communicate visually, and helping them transform something abstract and complex into concrete and simpler images.
Present the topic the students will work on or let the students choose.
They begin with a quick and simple sketch, focusing on visualising their initial thoughts and ideas without worrying about details or aesthetics.
The pupils create several sketches – possibly timed, to encourage them to produce rough sketches without worrying about accuracy or appearance.
They choose one or more of their sketches to develop further by adding details, explaining ideas visually, or by creating several sketch versions of the same idea.
Emphasise that it’s not about making beautiful drawings, but about expressing thoughts visually – everyone can sketch.
The method can be combined with various brainstorming techniques or with the Photo Safari method, where images can inspire new sketches.
Pupils can share and give feedback on each other’s sketches, and they can also reflect on how visualising their ideas has helped them understand or develop them.
Pupils can select one sketch that represents the idea they want to continue working on, or create a more refined version as a final product.
