Stand up if..

Students stand up when they can answer yes to a question or agree with a statement.

The method is good for having all students physically express their answers or opinions at the same time — while also getting a sense of others’ responses.

BEFORE:

Prepare a series of questions or statements that students will respond to. The questions/statements can start with “Stand up if…”

Explain to students that they should stand up without saying anything when they can answer yes to questions or they agree with a statement.

Read the first question or statement. Those students who can answer yes or agree stand up.

Continue with the next question. Those students who can answer yes or agree remain standing or stand up. The others sit down.

Continue until all questions have been asked.

Didactic tips:

  • Optionally, ask selected students during the activity why they answered the way they did.
  • Students can also sit down after each question or statement to create even more movement.
  • The method can also be used to evaluate an activity or a learning sequence.
  • The method is great to use, for example, at the end of the school day as an energizer that gets students out of their seats.
