METHOD

Star Race

Students move in groups between different stations arranged in a star-shaped route. Each station contains a challenge, task, or activity that students must complete before moving on to the next station.

This method supports collaboration, problem-solving, and subject immersion in a dynamic and active way, where students learn by doing and reflecting in practice.

1

Plan a series of stations (e.g., 5–7) with relevant tasks or challenges. Arrange the stations in a star pattern with a common starting and meeting point in the center.

2

Divide students into groups and give them a brief explanation of the challenges and rules.

3

The students run/walk with their group to a station, solve the challenge and then return to the center. If applicable, their answer/solution is approved, they are given a new task and walk/run on to the next station.

4

When all groups have completed all stations or the time is up, the class gathers together again.

Didactic tips:

  • Consider including a mix of logical, physical, creative, and collaborative tasks or challenges.
  • Optionally, set a time limit for each task or challenge so that students don’t spend too long on one activity.
  • You may introduce roles within the groups (e.g., reader, recorder, timekeeper, motivator) to distribute responsibility. These roles can also rotate between stations.
  • Groups can earn points or small rewards for each completed task.
  • QR codes or apps can be used to include digital resources (e.g., videos) and/or to collect answers online.
  • Optionally, evaluate the activity with the students by asking them to reflect on their solutions, teamwork, and learning outcomes.
