METHOD

Random Groups

  • Students are randomly divided into groups using numbers. Each student is assigned a number, and they then form groups with other students who have the same number.
  • This method supports quick and simple grouping of students, which can be useful in various learning activities where random groupings create dynamism and variation in collaboration.
1

Decide how many groups to form and how many students will be in each group.

2

Point to the students one by one and assign them a number in a continuous sequence. Restart the sequence once you reach the total number of groups. Students can either line up, stand in a circle – or stay where they are.

3

The students join together with the others who have received the same number as them.

Didactic tips:

  • Optionally, write numbers on small slips of paper for students to draw. Instead of numbers, the groups can also have names relevant to the theme – or based on the group’s specific task or challenge.
  • You can also use a digital number generator or an online group divider to generate random numbers.
  • Consider printing images related to the theme and cutting them into as many pieces as there are members in each group. Students draw pieces and find others who have drawn the remaining parts of the same image, so together they form a complete picture (a puzzle).
  • Random groups can be used for quick discussions, activities, or longer-term group work.
