Pupils respond individually to a series of statements by positioning themselves along a line according to how much they agree with each statement.
The method is useful for encouraging pupils to take a stand, express their opinions, and/or reflect on a process they have been through.
BEFORE:
Prepare a set of statements for the pupils to respond to.
Numbered cards or a piece of string are placed along a line on the floor with plenty of space around.
Read a statement aloud and ask the pupils to position themselves on the line in accordance with their response or opinion.
Optionally, follow up by asking selected pupils to explain their placement.
Repeat from step 2 until the pupils have responded to all the statements, or until time is up.
The statements can be playful or exaggerated to provoke reactions and encourage pupils to take a stance.
Be aware that pupils can easily be influenced by where others position themselves. You might want to emphasise that it is perfectly okay to place themselves somewhere completely different from the rest.
Consider asking each pupil at least once why they chose their position.
It is important that pupils’ reasons are allowed to stand without challenge, and that others simply listen.
