METHOD

Memory

Students work in pairs or groups to create cards with photos, concepts, sentences, or other related items that go together in pairs. They exchange their cards with another group and play the memory game, matching the content on the cards while remembering their positions.

The method supports students in identifying and connecting concepts, photos, sentences, or other elements in a playful way.

1

Each pair or group creates a set of cards where the cards form pairs of two related elements (e.g., a picture and a challenge, two related statements, a concept and its meaning, a metaphor and an extended version, etc.).

2

The groups pair up with another group to play using each other’s cards, so they don’t play with their own.

3

The cards are shuffled and placed face down.

4

Students take turns flipping over two cards at a time to find matching pairs. When they find a pair, they keep it and get another turn. If the two cards don’t match, they are flipped back face down, and the turn passes to the next student.

5

The game continues until all pairs have been matched.

6

After the game, students reflect on the connections between the cards and share their understandings with each other.

Didactic tips:

  • Let the students first brainstorm possible connections to ensure good card pairs.
  • For example, students can play with the combined set of their own group’s cards and the cards of the group they join, or one group can act as judges while the other group plays. They switch roles when the first group has flipped all the cards.
  • The method can be used in different subjects by adapting the content of the cards (e.g., parts of speech, chemical terms, concepts, etc.).
  • The difficulty level can be varied by creating more abstract connections between the cards.
