ACTIVITY

Café presentation

Students present their creations (ideas, prototypes, products) at a table to a number of outside guests. The guests give feedback and move on to a new table.

The intention is to give students the opportunity to present their work briefly and precisely in a safe setting and to train their ability to receive and use feedback constructively.

1

Students prepare a presentation of their idea, prototype or product using the Elevator Pitch method. They set up a table and choose which visual aids (slides, posters, drawings, physical models, etc.) they will use to support their presentation.

2

Each group sits at a table and presents to a group of guests. The presentation lasts 3-5 minutes while the guests write their feedback on post-its (one feedback point per post-it). Ring a bell or something when the time is up.

3

The guests take turns giving feedback using the 4-Feedback method to the students. The guests place their post-its on the 4-feedback chart continuously or at the end. Ring a bell or something else when the time is up.

4

The students thanks for the feedback. The guests thanks for the presentation and move on to a new group.

5

Initiate a new presentation and feedback round.

6

A pre-agreed number of rounds will continue.

7

Debrief with students and guests. Invite guests to provide some general feedback on what they have seen and heard.

8

The guests are thanked and the students look at the feedback they have received.

Didactic tips:

  • Set out some creative guidelines or frameworks for the students’ presentations. These could include requirements for visual aids, or what they should cover as a minimum in their presentation.
  • If the guests are from outside, instruct them on what the students have been working on and the framework for the feedback.
  • If the guests are the other students from the class, it is useful to have two rounds, so that those who present and those who are guests switch roles midway through.
  • If possible, give the students who present different roles. One can be the primary presenter, one can note the feedback, and one can ask questions that the students want answers to.
  • If possible, create a cozy atmosphere with a café atmosphere.
  • After the guests have left, a joint review can be held with the students. If possible, remind them that not all feedback should be listened to 1:1, but that it provides insight into how others experience what was presented. If possible, have a chat with the students about:
    • What did we learn from presenting multiple times?
    • What feedback resonated?
    • How can we use the feedback?
  • The activity can be used both as a conclusion to a project process and as a feedback session along the way, where students use the insights gained to improve their idea, prototype or product.
