ACTIVITY

Food & Facts Memory

The students play a memory game where each pair of cards connects a picture of a food item with its explanation (e.g., apple → local seasonal fruit; burger → high CO₂ footprint).

The intention is to strengthen knowledge about food, health, and sustainability in a playful way and to encourage critical reflection on food choices.

1

Introduction (2 min): Teacher explains the rules: students will play Memory in pairs. One card shows a food picture, the other card an explanation. They must find the correct pairs.

2

Game (10 min): In pairs or small groups, students play the Memory game.
Example pairs:
– Apple → Local and seasonal fruit
– Banana → Long transport, high food miles
– Beef → High CO₂ footprint
– Broccoli → Healthy, plant-based
– Chocolate → Made from cocoa beans, long supply chain
– Tap water → Sustainable alternative to bottled water
– Fish → Source of protein, overfishing risk
– Bread → Basic food, made from cereals
– Yogurt → Dairy product, source of calcium
– Chips → Processed food, lots of salt/fat

3

Reflection (3 min): Short class discussion: Which pair was most surprising? What did you learn about food and sustainability?

Didactic tips:

  • For younger students: use simpler pairs (e.g., picture + name)
  • For older students: add sustainability facts (CO₂, water footprint, local/global)
  • Variation: let students design their own extra pairs after the game.
