METHOD

Photo Reflection

Students reflect on what they have learned by selecting photos from their learning process.

This method is useful for capturing moments from the students’ learning journey through their photographic memory.

1

Take photos continuously throughout the entire course. These can be photos of students being active and working creatively, as well as of the materials and products they create.

2

Share the photographs with the students digitally or by printing them out and laying them on the floor.

3

Students individually and quietly select one or more photos that illustrate what they have learned, become curious about, or otherwise gained from the course.

4

Students write a short text for each photo and save it in an agreed location.

Didactic tips:

  • Students can take responsibility for photographing and documenting their learning process themselves, for example by having selected students take on the role of photo-documentarians.
  • If students need to select several photos, they can choose them based on categories that match the learning focus of the course. For example, if the focus has been on good collaboration, a photo might show how students have experienced working with their group.
  • Optionally, use the Timed Round Robin method to have students share their photo(s) and what they have written with a partner.
