METHOD

Guess, Share, and Guess Again

The students guess the answer to a question, and after sharing their guesses with each other, they guess again.

The method trains students to refine their guesses based on the group’s collective knowledge.

1

Ask the class a question. Give the students thinking time, and ask them to write down their individual guess on paper.

2

At the signal, the students show their answers to each other. In groups, the students explain their guesses and how others’ guesses have influenced their own thinking.

3

Based on the group discussion, each student writes a new and more informed guess on signal, which they then show to each other on the signal.

Didactic tips:

  • Choose to ask questions that can be answered with numbers or single words, so that students do not have to respond in long sentences. For example: How many soft drinks are consumed at the school party? or Which planet is closest to Earth?

  • Have the students reflect on how the exercise affected their own answers. Were they influenced by others’ opinions, or did they stick to their original answers? And why? Can the class reach a common answer?

  • Use, for example, the Round Robin method when students share their guesses with each other.
