METHOD

Pattern Grouping

Students group material based on patterns they observe.

The method is useful for helping students process and gain an overview of connections within a large amount of material.

1

Students lay out all the material they want to group on a table, on the floor, or display it on a wall. It is important that the entire material is visible to them. The material could, for example, be collected data, photos, ideas, or notes.

2

Students look for patterns and connections in the material and rearrange it to form groupings.

3

Students give each grouping a heading, and they discuss along the way whether it makes sense to move individual parts of the material around.

Didactic tips:

  • Students may benefit from starting by grouping the material individually and in silence.
  • The method can be used alongside the Knowledge Wall method, where students display data, photos, ideas and/or notes on a visible wall in the classroom.
