Students group material based on patterns they observe.
The method is useful for helping students process and gain an overview of connections within a large amount of material.
Students lay out all the material they want to group on a table, on the floor, or display it on a wall. It is important that the entire material is visible to them. The material could, for example, be collected data, photos, ideas, or notes.
Students look for patterns and connections in the material and rearrange it to form groupings.
Students give each grouping a heading, and they discuss along the way whether it makes sense to move individual parts of the material around.
