METHOD

Visualising

Pupils create mental or physical images of ideas, scenarios, or concepts to make them more concrete and tangible.

This method helps pupils clarify their thoughts, communicate ideas visually, and discover new perspectives through creative expression.

1

Explain to the pupils that visualisation is about transforming thoughts, ideas, or feelings into concrete images or graphic expressions, either digitally or physically.

2

Choose a specific theme or idea for the pupils to work on, for example, a future scenario or a solution to a challenge.

3

Pupils come up with which elements or ideas should be included in the visualisation. They can create lists or mind maps.

4

Pupils draw, paint, create collages, or use digital tools to translate their thoughts into visual expressions. This could be, for example, an infographic, a mind map, or a moodboard.

Didactic tips:

  • You might start with a brief inspiration exercise, for example, visual examples or videos showing how visualisation can take many forms.

  • You could use the Silent Brainstorming method to help pupils develop their own ideas before hearing others’.

  • Allow time for feedback using the Two Stars and a Wish method, either from the teacher or fellow pupils. Pupils can then adjust or expand their visualisations based on this feedback.

  • Try experimenting with different tools, such as digital apps (Canva, Miro) or more traditional materials (coloured pencils, paper).

  • Pupils can present their visualisations to the class or group and explain what they have visualised and why they chose that particular expression.

  • If time allows, pupils can create a joint visualisation as a group exercise using the Weaving Together method.

  • This method is used, among other activities, in activity XXX.
