Host a nature-inspired and zero outdoor party with themed activities, food, and decorations that celebrate nature and highlight our connections to it.
Build teamwork and collaboration skills while reflecting on how we are interconnected with nature, people, and the wider world.
Before introducing this activity, think about the financial picture. Can the school finance this, or do you need to find financial support elsewhere?
Finding funding can become a prepatory/conditional acitivity in itself.
Set the scene – Explain that this will be an end-of-year, nature-inspired, zero-waste party to celebrate together and promote sustainable living.
Choose a space – Use the school grounds or a local park, and check permissions, facilities, and a wet-weather backup.
Organise students teams – Divide responsibilities. Think of tasks as:
To enhance cooperation, use the Team Contract method.
Make groups by using the Interest Groups or Competency Groups.
Plan for zero waste – Encourage reusable plates, cups, and cutlery; avoid single-use items; set up clearly labelled waste/compost/recycling stations.
Design activities – Examples include a “web of life” connection game with yarn, a nature scavenger hunt, sound mapping, or an upcycling craft station.
There are several methods that lead to new, inspiring ideas. Think of:
Prepare food and decor – Opt for local, plant-based foods in reusable containers. Use natural or reusable decorations (fabric bunting, leaves, stones, chalk art).
Run the party – Begin with a short welcome, rotate groups through activities, and encourage students to reflect on how they are connected to nature and each other.
Reflect and clean up – End with a group reflection, record waste station results, and ensure the site is left tidy with no trace.
